A.J. Burnett allows three runs in five innings during return to Pirates' rotation

Pittsburgh Pirates starter A.J. Burnett lasted five innings and allowed three runs Thursday as the Pirates fell to the Milwaukee Brewers in 13 innings.

What It Means:

This was Burnett's first start since July 30th as he was dealing with an elbow issue. Without the ability to throw a rehab start in the minors, Burnett left the game after only 64 pitches. He allowed only three hits while walking two and striking out three.

Burnett's xFIP is up to a still respectable 3.55 on the season through 22 starts. At 38 years old, the Pirates will hope to have him healthy for the postseason. Our projections see him posting a 4.38 ERA in his final starts of the season.
