Phillies claim Pirates' Juan Nicasio off irrevocable waivers
The Philadelphia Phillies have claimed relief pitcher Juan Nicasio off irrevocable waivers, according to The News Journal's Meghan Montemurro.
On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates placed Nicasio on irrevocable outright waivers, meaning they'll get nothing in return for the reliever now that he's been claimed. It's a very odd move and only saves the Pirates a very minimal amount of money. As for the Phillies, Nicasio will step into a high-leverage role and could work his way to some saves in the last few weeks of the season. They have sent Brock Stassi to Triple-A in order to make a roster spot for him.
Over 65 appearances and 60 innings, Nicasio has tallied 21 holds and 2 saves while maintaining a 3.00 FIP with 9.00 strikeouts per 9 innings. He's projected for 12 strikeouts and a 2.81 ERA in 12-plus innings of work the rest of the season.
