Pirates' Gerrit Cole goes eight strong, strikes out seven in win
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole went eight innings and struck out seven in Thursday's 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Cole allowed five hits and three runs in the first three innings, but held the Tigers scoreless while facing the bare minimum through the next five frames. In total, he fanned seven and walked one as he improved to 9-8 in 2017.
Cole has gone at least 6 in each of his last 7 starts, with 9 strikeouts per 9 innings and a 3.33 FIP. He has earned a 4-1 record in those starts and now has a 4.16 FIP on the year.
