Nationals swing deal for Twins' closer Brandon Kintzler

The Washington Nationals acquired relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler from the Minnesota Twins for pitching prospect Tyler Watson and $500,000 in international spending money.

What It Means:

The Twins went from buyers to sellers pretty quickly and the Nats are a beneficiary. Washington has struggled with bullpen woes all year. Their 5.07 reliever ERA ranks 29th in all of baseball. The addition of Kinzler -- along with Ryan Madsen and Sean Doolittle -- helps turn the back of the pen from a weakness to a strength. No word as of yet who will be the team's primary closer.

Kintzler has made 45 saves while posting a 2.98 ERA for the Twins (in 2016 and 17) but also owns a 4.07 SIERA while striking out just 14.8% of the batters he has faced in 45 1/3 innings pitched this year.
