Oakland yields James Kaprielian from Yankees in deal
The Oakland Athletics acquired starting pitcher Jameson Kaprielian, outfielder Dustin Fowler, and infield/outfield prospect Jorge Mateo from the New York Yankees in exchange for starting pitcher Sonny Gray and $1.5 million in international spending money.
Kaprielian, the 16th overall pick of the 2015 MLB Draft, has been on the shelf all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April for his elbow. He's unlikely to be ready for the start of 2018, but the 23-year-old right-hander has the tools to eventually emerge as a front-line starter in the Athletics' rotation.
Over three starts for High-A Tampa in 2016, Kaprielian allowed 6 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 22 batters (33.9 percent) and walking just 3 (4.6 percent) across 18 total innings.
