Steven Souza strains hip in Rays' loss

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Steven Souza was pulled from Wednesday's loss to the Oakland Athletics due to a left hip strain.

What It Means:

Souza had to be helped off the field after injuring himself on an awkward steal attempt in the top of the first inning, which he claims was caused by muddy conditions on the field. The 28-year-old outfielder said he doesn't think the injury is serious and won't lead to him missing any time, but more will be known on his status after further evaluation later today. Souza is slashing .271/.369/.514 with an .883 OPS while adding 20 home runs, 60 RBI, and 52 runs scored in 383 plate appearances (90 games) this season.

Without yet knowing the extent of the injury, but still accounting for missed time, numberFire's models project Souza to turn in a .257 batting average with 5 homers, 17 RBI, and 18 runs scored in 131 more plate appearances over the remainder of the season
