Yankees' Michael Pineda placed on the disabled list with partially torn UCL

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 6, with a partial tear of his UCL.

What It Means:

This is a huge blow for Pineda, who has been recommended Tommy John surgery. He still hasn't settled on that option, but if he does he will be out until at least the second half of the 2018 season, and potentially until as late as the 2019 season. The 28-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent in the winter, and this will obviously severely limit his value on the open market. Luis Cessa will replace Pineda in the Yankee's rotation for now.

Pineda turned in a 4.39 ERA, 3.75 SIERA, 22.4% strikeout rate and 1.29 WHIP through 17 starts (96 1/3 innings pitched) in 2017.
