Vince Velasquez (elbow) may be moved to Phillies' bullpen upon return

The Philadelphia Phillies coaching staff and front office will discuss on Friday whether pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) will be used as a starter or reliever once he returns.

What It Means:

Velasquez last pitched in the majors on May 30, but as he begins his rehab assignment, the Phillies may decide to move him to the bullpen once he's activated. The 25-year-old right-hander has started each of his past 34 appearances in the big leagues, but a switch to relief wouldn't necessarily be permanent. He opened the year with a 5.58 ERA (4.08 SIERA), 24.1 percent strikeout rate, 9.6 percent walk rate and 1.46 WHIP over 50 innings pitched while going 2-5 across 10 starts.

numberFire's models currently project Velasquez to record a 4.69 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 21.7 strikeout percentage with a 6-7 record in 101 2/3 innings over the remainder of the season.
