Mariners' Drew Smyly needs Tommy John surgery
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Drew Smyly has a torn UCL and needs Tommy John surgery according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
Smyly was originally injured with what was described as a flexor strain during the World Baseball Classic, but he suffered a setback this week and now it's been uncovered he has a torn UCL. He will likely be out for the next 12-15 months, which means he could miss most of the 2018 season. He undergoes surgery on July 6 with Dr. James Andrews.
Smyly last pitched in 2016, where he posted a 4.88 ERA and a 22.6 strikeout rate over 175.1 innings pitched with the Tampa Bay Rays.
