The Tampa Bay Rays recalled outfielder Mallex Smith from Triple-A Durham.
Smith will take over as the Rays' primary center fielder with Kevin Kiermaier (hip) slated to miss at least a couple months. "He's going to get his chance,'' manager Kevin Cash said of Smith.
Smith held a .311/.345/.477 triple-slash line with 3 home runs, 21 runs, 8 RBI, and 16 stolen bases in 140 plate appearances this year at Durham. Last year in the pros, Smith had a .681 OPS in 215 plate appearances, with 3 homers, 28 runs, 22 RBI, and 16 stolen bases.
