Misplays in the field cost Jharel Cotton, Athletics in loss to Cleveland

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jharel Cotton was charged with five runs -- one earned -- in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Cleveland Indians.

What It Means:

Cotton yielded just one run over five innings before everything fell apart in the sixth. After he put two on with walks, poor play in the field cost him four potential outs. Cotton didn't help his own cause with a bad throw home on a play in front of the plate, but he wound up getting pulled after the Athletics somehow converted on just two of their seven chances for outs. The 25-year-old right-hander gave up four hits with four walks and four strikeouts while dropping to 3-6 on the year.

On the season, Cotton now owns a 5.11 ERA and 4.62 WHIP while striking out 8.03 batters every nine innings across 49 1/3 total frames in nine starts.
