Nationals lose late after Max Scherzer punches out 11

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer struck out 11 and gave up two runs over eight innings but was hung with a no-decision in an extra-innings 5-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

What It Means:

Scherzer had a no-hitter in play before Seth Smith sent one soaring in the sixth inning. He did his part with 113 pitches over eight frames, but Enny Romero blew the save, costing both Washington and Scherzer the win. This makes two consecutive 11-strikeout performances for the ace right-hander. He'll look to improve to 5-2 on Sunday when he takes the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer has twirled a 2.59 ERA over 48 2/3 innings this season. His 0.88 WHIP is fifth in the majors while his 33.0 strikeout percentage ranks third.
