Athletics call upon Santiago Casilla for first save of season
Oakland Athletics reliever Santiago Casilla pitched a scoreless ninth to protect a 4-2 lead against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson worked the eighth, leaving the bottom of the Angels' order for Casilla in the final frame. He walked one and put away the others to secure Oakland's first win of 2017. Athletics manager Bob Melvin said last week that he may open the year with a committee approach at closer, but if Casilla is the favorite for saves, he could be worth rostering.
numberFire's models project Casilla for a 3.69 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 24.8 strikeout percentage over the rest of the season.
