Pirates give Tyler Glasnow fifth starter spot
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle announced Friday that starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow will open the regular season as the fifth starter in the rotation.
Glasnow has not pitched particularly well this spring, posting a 5.65 ERA with 23 strikeouts. The 23 year-old has shown plenty of promise in Triple-A Indianapolis, but he was shaky and had to be shut down due to shoulder troubles during his time in the big leagues in 2016. If his command is on he is one of the better young pitching prospects in the game, but with a major league 12.4 walk rate he will need to show he is capable of not giving out too many free passes to first base
Our models project Glasnow to post a 4.72 ERA and 1.56 WHIP with 65 strikeouts over 77.6 innings pitched in 2017.
