Red Sox scratch Tyler Thornburg Monday due to trapezius spasm

Boston Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg was scratched from a scheduled Grapefruit League appearance Monday due to an upper right trapezius spasm.

What It Means:

This was Thornburg's first scheduled appearance since March 1 as he continues to work through a dead arm phase, but it now sounds like he's most likely going to start the year on Boston's disabled list. The 28-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in December after twirling an excellent 2.15 ERA across 67 innings last season, as well as a pair of career-bests with a 3.28 xFIP and 34.2 strikeout percentage.

The injury could impact his projections, but numberFire's algorithms currently have Thornburg pegged for a 3.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27.6 strikeout percentage over 58 1/3 innings this upcoming season.
