Mets' Steven Matz altering mechanics to compensate for elbow
New York Mets starting pitcher Steven Matz is working on shortening his arm angle to put "less bang" on his troublesome left elbow, pitching coach Dan Warthen said Monday.
Matz has already been scratched from his final turn in the Grapefruit League rotation due to irritation in his left elbow, and he experienced some lingering tightness Monday while throwing. The 25-year-old left-hander will open the year on the 10-day disabled list. Seth Lugo is expected to replace him in the Mets' rotation.
As of now, numberFire's metrics project Matz to go 10-8 in 2017 while twirling a 3.49 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22.1 strikeout percentage across 162 1/3 innings.
