Cardinals penciling in Jhonny Peralta at third

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jhonny Peralta will be the team's starting third baseman and Jedd Gyorko will be a utility infielder, per comments made by manager Mike Matheny on Friday.

What It Means:

This doesn't come as much of a surprise, but the starting label won't carry significant weight, as Peralta and Gyorko will both spend plenty of time on the hot corner. Gyorko paced the Cardinals last season with 30 home runs.

Peralta is expected to hit .265 across 446 plate appearances in 2017 while posting 12 home runs and 50 RBI's, according to numberFire's models. Gyorko is pegged for a .247 batting average, 21 home runs and 62 RBI's in 455 plate appearances of his own.
