Nationals place Derek Norris on waivers

The Washington Nationals have placed catcher Derek Norris on waivers, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.

What It Means:

Norris became expendable when the Nats signed Matt Wieters to a two-year deal last month. The Nationals have been shopping Norris but haven't found any takers. It's possible a team could claim Norris off waivers, but then they'd be on the hook for his $4.2 million salary for this year. Because arbitration salaries are non-guaranteed, the Nats will only owe Norris $700,000 if he's released by March 15.

Norris has had a solid spring, hitting .400 with two homers and three RBI. Norris struggled from the dish in 2016, turning in career-lows with a .186/.255/.328 slash and .252 wOBA across 458 plate appearances for the Padres. His 30.3 percent strikeout rate was the highest of his five seasons in the big leagues.
