Royals sign Wandy Rodriguez and Joba Chamberlain to minor league deals
The Royals signed starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez and reliever Joba Chamberlain to minor league contracts.
Wandy Rodriguez put up a terrible 4.90 ERA and a poor 4.35 xFIP in 15 starts with the Rangers this year. One encouraging sign is Rodriguez managed to bring his fly ball rate down from 42.4 last year to 33.8 this year. Johnny Cueto and Yordano Ventura are the only two Royals starters with an xFIP below 4.25, so Rodriguez may have a legitimate opportunity with the Royals.
Chamberlain brings with him a 4.09 ERA and a 4.05 xFIP along with a 14.9 strikeout percentage in 22 major league innings pitched this year. The Royals bullpen ranks second in ERA (2.47), 12th in xFIP (3.66), and 11th in strikeout rate (22.7%). Chamberlain isn't likely to help those numbers with the way he has pitched this season.
