Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer (finger) played long toss on Wednesday.
What It Means:
"I was really shocked he was throwing as hard as he was and as well as he did," said manager Dusty Baker of Scherzer's long-toss work. The reigning National League Cy Young winner is working his way back from a stress fracture in the knuckle of his right right finger, diagnosed in January. He has yet to begin throwing off the mound, as he is still experiencing some pain. His availability for Opening Day should clarify over the coming weeks.
Scherzer accrued a 2.96 ERA (3.37 xFIP) over 228 1/3 innings pitched in 2016. His 31.5 percent strikeout rate was second-best among qualifying starters.
