Wilson Ramos

Rays' Wilson Ramos (knee) won't be available until July

Tampa Bay Rays catcher Wilson Ramos (knee) "will not likely be ready to play until July, and he probably won't be able to catch until August," writes Bill Chastain of MLB.com.

What It Means:

This contradicts Ramos, who said in December that his recovery was going so well that he anticipated being ready to serve as a designated hitter by the beginning of May. "Ramos, we're going to learn as he goes along," Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said. "We know he's going to be longer. We've talked about it before. We don't exactly know when. ... We knew when we signed him he's got very high expectations for when he'll be back, and that's great. It sounds like the backstop will only be available for half the season, so owners should keep that in mind with drafts approaching.

Ramos slashed .307/.354/.496 with a career-best .361 wOBA through 523 plate appearances for the Washington Nationals in 2016. He tallied 22 home runs and 80 RBI's on the year, both of which also represented career-highs.
