Braves trade for Reds' second basemen Brandon Phillips

The Atlanta Braves acquired second baseman Brandon Phillips and cash from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for relievers Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo.

What It Means:

The Reds are paying $13 million of Phillips' $14 million salary in 2017, making it a low-risk move for the Braves. They needed another infielder after finding out Sean Rodriguez would be out three-to-five months with a shoulder injury. The Reds get to free space open for Jose Peraza to take over the everyday second basemen duties. Phillips is expected to bat in the six-spot in the Braves' lineup this season.

Phillips slashed .291/.320/.416 with 11 home runs, 64 RBI's and 14 stolen bases across 584 plate appearances in 2016.
