Yankees to sign Chris Carter to one-year deal

The New York Yankees reportedly have signed free-agent first baseman Chris Carter to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.

What It Means:

The former Milwaukee Brewer finally has a resolution to his unusual story. After tying for the National League lead with 41 home runs last season, Carter was non-tendered by the Milwaukee Brewers. Out on the free-agent market, the slugger could not find a home and now has to settle for a bargain deal for the Yankees. In New York, Carter will battle youngsters Greg Bird and Tyler Austin for playing time at first, while possibly spending some time at designated hitter.

While Carter owns monstrous pop, he is essentially a one-trick pony as he batted .227 or less in his last four seasons while leading the league in strikeouts twice. He owns a horrendous 33.1 strikeout percentage in his career.
