Astros, Rays, and Brewers in mix for free agent Matt Wieters
The Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays are possible suitors for free agent catcher Matt Wieters, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Wieters has also been linked to the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves, though the Braves are probably out after signing Kurt Suzuki to a one-year deal last week. The Astros would seem to be an awkward fit since they already have Brian McCann behind the plate. The Rays paid up for Wilson Ramos this offseason but they'll need someone to fill in while he recovers from ACL surgery. Tommy Stokke of FanRag Sports also reports that the Milwaukee Brewers "have emerged as a potential suitor" for Wieters.
Wieters slashed .243/.302/.409 last year in 464 plate appearances, with 17 home runs and an 18.3 percent strikeout rate -- his lowest since 2014.
