Brad Miller likely playing second base for Rays in 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays' "primary plan" is to use Brad Miller at second base, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

What It Means:

Miller came to Tampa Bay as a shortstop but moved to first base last year after the Rays acquired Matt Duffy. After trading Logan Forsythe earlier this week, though, a spot at second opened up. Miller has made 13 career starts at second, so he does have some experience there. With Miller moving to the keystone, the Rays could look to sign a first baseman. Chris Carter, Mike Napoli and Mark Reynolds are all available.

Miller had a .243/.304/.482 triple-slash line in 2016, but his 30 home runs were likely a result of his home run-to-fly ball rate doubling from 2015 to 2016. That's almost certain to come back to earth, as Miller's home stadium of Tropicana Field is notoriously pitcher-friendly. He also sold out for power a lot more, whiffing a career-high 24.8 percent of his plate appearances.
