Rays shut down Matt Duffy (heel) for remainder of 2016
Tampa Bay Rays infielder Matt Duffy (heel) has been shut down for the remainder of the 2016 season.
Duffy has been dealing with a lingering left Achilles injury and will visit a specialist in North Carolina on Friday to address the issue, potentially resulting in surgery. He played just 21 games for the Rays after being traded from the San Francisco Giants on August 1, but that deal was made with the future in mind anyway. Nick Franklin should continue to handle things at short for Tampa Bay down the stretch.
Duffy was unimpressive from the dish this year, slashing .258/.310/.357 with a .292 wOBA and .099 ISO through 366 plate appearances.
