Dodgers acquire Carlos Ruiz from Phillies
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired catcher Carlos Ruiz and cash from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for catcher A.J. Ellis, pitcher Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named later.
Ruiz has spent his entire career with the Phillies, debuting with them in 2006. During that span, he batted .266 with 68 home runs and 401 RBI's, while playing in two World Series (2008 and 2009). The 37 year-old Ruiz will serve as the backup to Yasmani Grandal, while Ellis will fill a similar role with the Phillies playing behind Cameron Rupp. Ruiz is slashing .261/.368/.352 this season.
Ruiz only has 193 plate appearances this season and a .091 ISO, but owns a .323 wOBA, which would rank tied for sixth-best among qualified catchers. We had projected him to post just a .598 OPS over the remaining course of the season.
