Daniel Hudson moving into late-inning role for Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Daniel Hudson will likely be moved into a late-inning role, per the comments of manager Chip Hale late Wednesday night.

What It Means:

The move is likely prompted by the struggles of Enrique Burgos, who has been tagged for seven earned runs in his last three innings of work, including four earned versus the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Hudson wasn't given complete rein over closing duties for Arizona, but he's the likely favorite for the next save opportunity that presents itself. After a rough July (19.29 ERA, seven innings pitched), the 29-year-old right-hander hasn't given up a score in 10 straight appearances (seven innings). Hale added that Randall Delgado is also a potential candidate for late-inning duties down the stretch. The current situation in Arizona's bullpen is less than ideal.

Hudson has had a relatively disappointing season, evidenced by a 4.16 SIERA that is the worst since his rookie year. He owns a 1.49 WHIP and 19.5 strikeout percentage across 45 2/3 innings of work on the year.
