Pirates, David Freese reach two-year, $11 million extension

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed third baseman/first baseman David Freese to a two-year contract extension with a club option for 2019.

What It Means:

Freese will receive $6.25 million next season and $4.25 million in 2018. The 2019 club option is worth $6 million and carries a $500,000 buyout. Freese has been a nice off-season signing for Pittsburgh -- they signed him to a one-year, $3 million deal -- and now he's locked up with the Pirates for at least the next two seasons at reasonable rates. He's slashing .276/.355/.437 with 12 taters and 49 RBI's in 391 plate appearances, while making 58 starts at the hot corner and 26 starts at first base.

Freese owns a .344 wOBA this season, which is his highest total since 2012. We project him to hit four more home runs and post a .753 OPS over the rest of the year.
