Padres' Colin Rea (elbow) decides against Tommy John surgery
San Diego Padres pitcher Colin Rea (elbow) has decided not to undergo Tommy John surgery, after meeting with Dr. James Andrews.
At the beginning of August, it was believed that Rea would have Tommy John, but that doesn't seem to be the case any longer. As an alternative, he will have a PRP injection on Thursday, which is to be followed up with three-to-four weeks of rest before being reevaluated. The 26 year-old initially suffered the elbow injury in his first outing with the Miami Marlins after they traded for him at the deadline. After the injury, Rea was subsequently reacquired by San Diego.
In his second season in the majors, Rea posted a 4.82 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP across 102 2/3 innings of work. He went 5-5 in 19 starts on the year, and his 17.62 strikeout percentage is below the current league average (20.98 percent).
