Matt Holliday (thumb) may return for Cardinals this season

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday (thumb) could make it back in 2016, general manager John Mozeliak said on Tuesday.

What It Means:

If this proves to be the case, it likely won't be until the end of September, or even early-October. Holliday was thumped by a high-and-tight pitch last Thursday, causing a fracture in his right thumb. He's scheduled to receive surgery on Wednesday. Whether or not the Cardinals bring back Holliday for the 2017 season remains to be seen, as the club holds a $17 million option for his services. They could also elect to buy him out for $1 million.

Holliday is slashing .242/.318/.450 this season, with 19 home runs, a .330 wOBA and a .208 ISO through 424 plate appearances.
