Cardinals' Matt Holliday will have thumb surgery on Wednesday

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday will undergo surgery on his fractured right thumb on Wednesday.

What It Means:

This likely means the end of Holliday's 2016 season, after he was hit by a pitch on Thursday, fracturing his thumb. Brandon Moss has replaced him as the primary left fielder for the Cardinals, but it's possible Jeremy Hazelbaker and Tommy Pham both see playing time there as well. Holliday has a $17 million club option for next season, or he can be bought out for $1 million. He could have already played his final game for the Cardinals.

Holliday is slashing .242/.318/.450 this season, with 19 home runs, a .330 wOBA and a .208 ISO through 424 plate appearances.
