Cody Reed

Reds demote lefty starter Cody Reed to AAA

The Cincinnati Reds optioned pitcher Cody Reed to Triple-A Louisville.

What It Means:

Reed only got three outs against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, allowing six earned and watching his ERA on the year balloon to 7.36. The young southpaw -- he's just 23 years-old -- should have a bright future, but he isn't quite ready for the majors. It's possible Reed gets called back up in September, though he might be shifted into a relief role in order to limit his innings.

Reed's 4.29 xFIP is much lower than his ERA, but it's still a poor mark, and his 18.70 strikeout percentage is below league average (20.99 percent). He's thrown 112 1/3 innings this season between Cincinnati and Triple-A, going 0-7 with the Reds (47 2/3 innings).
