Cardinals' Michael Wacha experiencing recurrence of scap injury
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) is experiencing a recurrence of the scapular issue that sidelined him in 2014, general manager John Mozeliak acknowledged Tuesday.
Per Mozeliak, it's unknown whether or not Wacha will make it back this year. He added that the 25-year-old right-hander may not be cut out for 200 innings in a season, and that his starting role would be revisited this winter. Things have fallen apart quickly for the 2013 NLCS MVP. Cardinals' top pitching prospect Luke Weaver will take the mound in Wacha's place this weekend for a road matchup with the Chicago Cubs. Alex Reyes, another premier pitching prospect for St. Louis, has also been promoted.
Wacha owns a 4.00 xFIP in 131 1/3 innings this season and a 19.12 strikeout percentage (league average is 21.00 percent). We currently project him to record a 4.10 ERA over the rest of the year.
