Jake Thompson to debut Saturday for Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies will call up pitcher Jake Thompson to make his major league debut Saturday against the San Diego Padres.
Thompson is replacing Aaron Nola, who is sidelined with a sprained elbow. Thompson posted a 2.50 ERA in 21 starts (129 2/3 innings) for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season and has recorded a victory in his last five starts. If he impresses in this opportunity, it's possible Thompson remains in the big leagues for the rest of the year.
Thompson's 3.76 FIP in Triple-A this season was significantly higher than his ERA, and his 16.83 strikeout percentage is underwhelming. He limited hitters to a .222 batting average.
