Angels' Garrett Richards (elbow) undergoes stem-cell procedure

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards (elbow) underwent a successful stem-cell injection.

What It Means:

An ultrasound in 10 days will determine the effect of the stem cell injection on Richards' right elbow injury. He is hoping to dodge Tommy John surgery. If his recovery can continue to progress without issue, he could pitch in a fall league after the season. The stem-cell treatment will not effect his status for the rest of the season -- Richards is done for the 2016 campaign.

Richards holds a 2.34 ERA and 22.97 strikeout percentage in 34 2/3 innings this season. He's 1-3 through six starts.
