Mets' Matt Harvey undergoes thoracic outlet surgery

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey underwent surgery Monday in St. Louis for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS).

What It Means:

Harvey was expected to miss the rest of the season, but now it's official. It was clear something was wrong with him even prior the news of his TOS, as he had an underwhelming 4.86 ERA and an 18.91 strikeout percentage (it was 26.60 percent for his career entering 2016) in 17 starts this season. The hope is that Harvey will be ready for the beginning of the 2017 season.

Harvey will end the season with a 4.12 xFIP and a 4.30 SIERA across 92 2/3 innings of work, both of which are career-worst marks. His 6.22 walk percentage was his worst total since his rookie season. Hopefully the TOS surgery will get him back on track.
