Pirates' Francisco Cervelli to begin rehab assignment Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli (hand) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

What It Means:

Cervelli broke his hand last month, but he's close to returning. He is given a maximum of 20 days to rehab, but he won't need to use all of it. The 30-year-old was slashing .257/.373/.293 with 21 RBI's in 201 plate appearances this season before his injury.

Cervelli's power has been nonexistent -- he owns just a .036 ISO -- but his on-base percentage is again excellent, thanks to the ninth-best walk percentage (14.90) among hitters with at least 200 plate appearances this season. Our models project him to hit .261/.351/.358 with two home runs and a .313 wOBA over the remaining course of the year.
