New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), his agent, Scott Boras, told ESPN on Friday.
Boras also claims that the TOS is what has caused Harvey's underwhelming play in 2016. Dr. Robert Thompson will perform the procedure in St. Louis and this is obviously a brutal blow for Harvey, the Mets and his owners. A timetable doesn't currently exist for his return, but this type of surgery has proved to be problematic for a handful of players in the past.
Harvey will end the season with a 4.86 ERA and 4.33 SIERA across 92 2/3 innings of work, both of which are career-worst marks. Conversely, his 18.91 strikeout percentage is the lowest of his career, while a 6.22 percent walk rate is Harvey's highest since his rookie campaign. He went 4-10 across 17 starts.
