New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey has been diagnosed with "symptoms consistent with thoracic outlet syndrome" (TOS) and is considering undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.
Harvey met with Dr. Robert Thompson, the leading specialist in the nation in TOS, on Thursday and the news was terrible. If the 27 year-old does decide surgery is the best route, it's possible that a return won't happen until mid-2017. The track record of pitchers returning to their normal abilities -- or returning at all -- is not good.
Prior to hitting the disabled list, Harvey had a 4.86 ERA, 4.33 SIERA, an 18.9 percent strikeout rate and a 6.2 percent walk rate in 17 starts (92 2/3 innings) this season. These could be his end-of-season stats as well.
