Braves place John Gant on 15-day disabled list

The Atlanta Braves placed pitcher John Gant on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

What It Means:

After beginning the season in the bullpen, the Braves moved Gant into the starting rotation. He strained his oblique in his latest start, which was Monday against the Cleveland Indians. It's not yet known how long he'll be out, but obliques can be tricky, so Gant might spend more than the minimum of 15 days on the disabled list. Casey Kelly has been recalled from Triple-A to fill Gant's spot on the roster.

Gant owns a 4.00 xFIP and a 23.9 strikeout percentage (league average is 21.0 percent) in 30 1/3 innings pitched this season. He's been better as a starter, posting a 3.81 xFIP in 18 2/3 innings. Our models project Gant to record a 5.10 ERA and a 17.6 strikeout percentage over the remaining course of the season.
