Mets' Zack Wheeler will resume throwing Monday

New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (elbow) will resume long-tossing on Monday.

What It Means:

Wheeler had a simulated game canceled after he experienced nerve irritation in his right elbow last week. He was given a cortisone shot which might help, and since he is close to throwing again, a rehab assignment might not be too far off. He had been targeting to return from Tommy John surgery soon after the All-Star break, but it's possible he'll be sidelined through the entire month of July.

Wheeler last pitched in the majors in 2014, showing lots of promise by posting a 3.49 xFIP and a 23.6 strikeout percentage across 185 1/3 innings. Our models currently project Wheeler to face 327 batters across 77 innings on the year, recording a 4.45 ERA with a 16.2 percent strikeout rate.
