Braves place Mallex Smith (thumb) on 15-day disabled list
The Atlanta Braves placed outfielder Mallex Smith on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 20, with a fractured left thumb.
Smith fractured his thumb after being hit by a pitch on Sunday and is expected to be out for 8-10 weeks. This puts his return around the end of August or the beginning of September. Emilio Bonifacio has been called up to replace Smith on the active roster.
Smith is slashing .237/.312/.379 with three home runs, 14 stolen bases, and a .302 wOBA in 192 plate appearances in his first season in the big leagues. His 0.6 Wins Above Replacement ranked third-best among hitters on the Braves.
