The Chicago White Sox have requested release waivers on pitcher Mat Latos, according to Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com.
This means Latos will become a free agent within the next 48 hours. Chicago designated him for assignment on June 9 after he allowed 29 earned runs over his last 36 innings with the White Sox. Latos signed a one-year, $3 million deal as a free agent in February.
Latos posted a 5.40 xFIP in 60 1/3 innings pitched this season -- which ranks fourth-worst among pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched -- and 12.1 strikeout percentage, the second worst clip among this same group. His career 3.57 ERA might help him land a job with a new club, but he may have to settle for a minor-league contract.
