Athletics to call up Daniel Mengden for Saturday start
The Oakland Athletics will call up pitcher prospect Daniel Mengden to start against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee.
Mengden opened the season at Double-A and made four starts at that level, posting a 0.78 ERA in that space. After he was leveled up to Triple-A, the results weren't much different. In seven starts at that level, the 23-year-old right-hander held a 1.39 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 39/10 K/BB ratio over 45 1/3 innings. There is no guarantee that he can replicate that fine work at the major league level, but if he can stick in the rotation -- Jesse Hahn was just sent to Triple-A -- he makes for a decent speculative add in deeper AL-only formats.
This season has arguably been Mengden's best as a professional, posting a 2.18 FIP in Double-A and a 3.74 FIP in Triple-A, to go with strikeout percentages of 30.1 and 22.4 respectively. The Reds have a team wOBA of just .308 -- which ranks 22nd -- so they make for a potentially nice matchup for a Major League debut.
