White Sox designate Mat Latos for assignment

The Chicago White Sox designated pitcher Mat Latos for assignment.

What It Means:

Latos' rough outing Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals was the final straw. He got off to a promising start this season with Chicago, posting a 0.74 ERA over his first four appearances, but the 28-year-old right-hander had allowed 29 earned runs over his last 36 innings. Latos will likely pass through waivers and hit the free agent market. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the White Sox in February.

Latos has posted a 5.38 xFIP in 60 1/3 innings pitched this season -- which ranked fourth-worst among qualified starters -- and a 12.1 percent strikeout percentage, the worst clip among starters. His career 3.57 ERA might help him land a job with a new club, but he may have to settle for a minor-league contract.
