Mariners' Tony Zych (rotator cuff tendinitis) to begin throwing off a mound
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Tony Zych (rotator cuff tendinitis) is aiming to begin throwing off a mound in a week.
He's been playing catch without issue for the last two weeks, but mound work is always the major test. Zych was placed on the disabled list May 4.
He had a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts over his first 12 innings this season. Zych's 3.30 xFIP is just slightly above his 3.00 ERA, and his 38.0 strikeout percentage is currently 12th among qualified relievers this season. We had projected Zych to record a 3.13 ERA with a 29.7 strikeout percentage across 60 innings in 2016, but these numbers now depend on the severity of his injury.
