Tampa Bay's Alex Colome notches six-out save

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Colome notched a six-out save Tuesday against the Miami Marlins.

What It Means:

It was his first six-out save. Colome entered the game with two on and nobody out in the eighth inning. He induced a double-play grounder before giving up an RBI single to Adeiny Hechavarria, but got Miguel Rojas to fly out to center field to end the threat. He then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, which included a pair of strikeouts. Colome has done an excellent job in the closer role for Tampa Bay, posting a 1.29 ERA and 28/4 K/BB ratio in 21 innings while going 12-for-12 in save chances. Brad Boxberger is expected to get his old job back when he comes off the disabled list, but Colome could make that decision more difficult than originally expected.

Colome now owns a 1.79 xFIP -- which ranks 6th best among relievers -- and a 36.4 strikeout percentage. Our models currently project him to record a 2.84 ERA and a 22.3 strikeout percentage over the remaining course of the season.
