Braves designate lefty Brian Matusz for assignment
Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Brian Matusz was designated for assignment.
Well, that was fast. The Braves acquired Matusz from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, but the deal was all about the draft pick (the 76th overall in June's draft) and the corresponding draft pool money. They covered his remaining salary (around $3 million) in order to get the deal done.
Matusz posted a 2.94 ERA in 49 innings of relief last season, but his xFIP was exactly a run higher (3.94). He had an impressive 27.20 strikeout percentage, well above the 20.40 percent league average. We project Matusz to post a 5.84 ERA in 34 innings pitched while recording a 16.70 strikeout percentage over the rest of the season.
