Boston Red Sox pitcher Carson Smith (elbow) is recovering "slower than expected" after relief appearances, Boston manager John Farrell acknowledged Wednesday.
Smith took five- and six-day breaks between his first two outings, and he hasn't pitched since making his third appearance of the season on Saturday. The right-hander missed the first four weeks of the 2016 regular season because of a strained flexor tendon in his throwing elbow. Farrell acknowledged a return to the disabled list is possible if Smith doesn't feel good after his next appearance.
Smith has worked just 2 2/3 innings this season, recording an 18.18 strikeout percentage while surrendering two hits and one run (zero earned).
